A NEW CHAPTER OF EXCELLENCE: College of Nursing Sciences, Amaigbo Holds 54th Matriculation

It was an ebullient atmosphere as the College of Nursing Sciences, St. Mary’s Joint Hospital, Amaigbo, an affiliate of Abia State University, held its 54th Matriculation Ceremony, marking another significant milestone in the institution’s long-standing commitment to nursing and midwifery education.

Held on Friday, 28th August 2026 at the College premises, Amaigbo, the ceremony featured the formal matriculation/capping of the 2025 Basic Midwifery students into the College. The occasion also marked the last of its kind as the College has now fully switched to the BNSc program in affiliation with the Abia state university, Uturu.

A major highlight of the occasion was the Grand Opening of the Bishop A. T. Ukwuoma’s Auditorium Complex. The Complex houses the school's new Multi-purpose auditorium, two well spaced standard lecture halls and standard guest rooms for visitors. The edifice has definitely added another landmark facility to the College and provided an enhanced environment for academic and institutional activities.

The event commenced with the celebration of Holy Mass at 10:00 a.m., setting a solemn and spiritual tone for the day’s activities.

The ceremony was hosted by Sr. Maria Celine Agonsi (IHM), Provost of the College, with Rev. Fr. Kingsley Ugbala, the College Chaplain, playing a key spiritual role. The Visitor to the College, Most Rev. Dr. A. T. Ukwuoma, Catholic Bishop of Orlu, was also highlighted as a principal personality for the occasion. 

Sr. Dr. Maria Theresiana Uchegbu chaired the planning Committee of the elaborate ceremony which also featured distinguished special guests, including Hon. Chief Paul Duru, Executive Chairman, Nwangele L.G.A., and Prof. Victor Nwagbara, CONSA Alumni President.

The 54th matriculation obviously represented not only the formal academic induction of a new set of Basic Midwifery students, but also a celebration of growth, institutional progressive development and the continuing vision of the College of Nursing Sciences, St. Mary’s Joint Hospital, Amaigbo.

As the newly matriculated students begin their professional training journey, the occasion stands as a significant chapter in the history of the College and a testament to its enduring pursuit of excellence in nursing and midwifery education.
